AFEJ Strategy – 2011 to 2013
The African Federation of Environmental Journalists (AFEJ) is a network and regional association founded in April 15, 2011, dedicated to promoting education understanding and awareness of the environment through the honest and accurate reporting of local, regional and international environmental and development issues. It acted as the head of national environmental journalist forums or media organizations of 42 countries in African region. The AFEJ ad- hoc committee was formed in April 15, 2011. Today, The duty of AFEJ is to build into a strong, independent and committed to promote excellence in environmental journalism worldwide by supporting environmental journalists specially Africa through Professionalism, Freedom of expression, Social responsibility, environmental justice, Networking and training.

AFEJ is a nonprofit and nonpartisan, which is a continental body of professionals from many different countries in Africa with different journalists and media grassroots and is the third lab our union representing over two thousand five hundred (2500) journalists and media practitioners in acrossAfrica.
This federation was formed specifically to build strategic frame work and process in order to report the current challenges which are unresolved such as the climate change, poverty, droughts and the livelihood crisis in the continent.

Mission
- To motivate and assist national and regional forums and related bodies to form a strong and efficient network to promote and protect sustainable development through environmental journalism.
Objectives
• To create and promote awareness on environmental issues among the public.
• To provide journalists with information and resources in order to encourage them to write and broadcast on the environmental issues.

• To provide journalists with comprehensive information on environmental issues.
• To make AFEJ a financially stable, effective and efficient networking organization.
- To educate journalists on environmental reporting to enhance their professionalism and credibility.
- To address all the necessary humanitarian needs in the continent and promote impartial accuracy in order to transform the lives of the African people. It intended to take a close look where the livelihood crisis exist and will do ground reporting by working with communities in that areas and improving the current subsist for women and children.
- AFEJ on disaster preparedness will provide a forum for global organizations to enhance coordination and information exchange in order to report and raise the emergencies in a timely and efficient manner.
- To raise the profile of water, hygiene and sanitation for all in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals inAfrica. It aims as well to ensure that the voices of rural people, especially the poor, are heard.
- To give training and strengthening the capacity of journalists especially for those who are currently reporting about the environment, climate change, poverty, droughts, human rights and the livelihood crisis in the continent.
- To provide a data base about environmental development through publication of reports from the ground levels in the continent with good quality reporting system.
- To co-operate with other NGOs and improve the cause of protecting the environment.
- To bring environmental journalism into the mainstream media.
- To promote greater awareness of environmental issues among journalists in the African region.
- To organize dialogues with decision-makers in the media with a view to having greater emphasis on environmental issues.
- To encourage greater exchange of ideas and information on environmental issues in the region among journalists.
- To promote the activities of its members.

Plan of Operation for year 2011 – 2013
• On line Publications on specific issues.
• Develop and Maintain and AFEJ website.
• Fundraising – aim for endowment funds of US$1 million for three years.
• Assist national forums by providing environmental resources.

• Expansion and strengthen of AFEJ to all countries in African region.
